It’s time for another book review. Today’s is Bohemian-Inspired Jewelry: 50 Designs using Leather, Ribbon and Cords by Lorelei Eurto and Erin Siegel.
What exactly is bohemian-inspired jewelry? According to the authors, “It’s an artistic, nature-inspired, and playful combination of materials and textures. Key features of bohemian style include vibrant colors; organic materials such as wood, stone, or clay, and patterned or textured fibers such as leather, ribbon, or cord.”
Basic jewelry-making techniques including stringing, knotting, and wire wrapping to more advanced steps such as knotted loops and button clasps are covered in the beginning of the book. There is also a guide to ribbons and cords including how to care for silk ribbons and pages on cord and ribbon specialty findings, basic findings, and tools.
The projects are very interesting and unique and each comes with a detailed materials list and step-by-step instructions. The Gardener caught my eye immediately and I just had to make it.
I used old buttons from my stash and added some new colored jump rings. I’ve not added the toggle yet because I thought I’d just finish it with jump rings.
It was really easy and fun to make. I absolutely love using jump rings after making a bracelet from instructions in Chain Maille Jewelry Workshop, a book I reviewed recently. I can easily see this same bracelet minus the ribbon and just jump rings. It might look nice with sari ribbon woven through the links.
Here is another one of their beautiful pieces.
Although I’m not a big jewelry maker and I don’t wear a lot of jewelry, this book has so many fun and interesting pieces I want to make. I like to use what I already have in my stash, but I love the elements they used in the pieces. Resource pages in the back of the book list where to find those supplies.
Most of the projects in this book aren’t difficult and could easily be completed by novice jewelry makers. For those more experienced, it could give great inspiration for more complex pieces. This is one jewelry book that I’ll keep on my book shelf and refer to when I need ideas.
